PGI Strongly Criticizes the Shooting Incident of Pt. Yeremia Zanambani at Intan Jaya

JAYAPURA, SUARAPAPUA.com—Chairman of the Association of Churches in Indonesia (PGI), Pt. Gomar Gultom strongly criticized the shooting incident of Pdt. Yeremia Zanambani, in Hitadipa, Intan Jaya Regency, Papua, which happened on Saturday, September 19, 2020.

According to him, the Daily Workers’ Council (MPH-PGI) is investigating this issue.

“Based on reports from GKII leaders as well as news from the Papuan media, it is suspected that he was shot by TNI troops during a military operation, while the national mainstream media said this was the act of the KKB, due to the release of the military. It is not easy for MPH-PGI to clarify this, ”said Pdt. Gultom as quoted from pgi.or.id, Monday (21/9/2020).

Pt.Gultom said, of course, all parties want the President of the Republic of Indonesia to immediately order the Chief of Police to thoroughly investigate this case and bring it to the realm of law. Also asked the President to order the Chief Commander to stop all forms of military operations, if this is really the act of the TNI.

“It has been quite a long time since Papua was covered in blood, and all forms of violence and military approaches so far have not resolved the Papua problem, instead it has created a cycle of violence that has no end. One Papuan life is also very valuable according to the mandate of the Indonesian constitution, especially before God, “he said.

He said his party would collect on President Jokowi’s promise, who had repeatedly said that he would use a cultural approach to solve the Papua problem.

“MPH-PGI will immediately charge for the President’s promise, who has repeatedly told us that he will take a cultural approach to solve the Papua problem. The President also stated that violence would not solve the Papuan problem. Papuan people and churches in Indonesia demand the fulfillment of the President’s promise. ”

PGI then hopes, Pt. Yeremia Zanambani is the last victim in Papua. “We all strive to make Papua a land of peace. The key to this direction is in the hands of the President with the help of the Commander and the Chief of Police. The authority for that is entirely in the hands of the President, “he said.
